Transfer Video8 To Digital

The format got smaller, but the problem looms as large as ever.

While VHS and Betamax had their own brief war over who would take control of your living room video player (VHS won, by the way), both of them were doomed in the realm of the home video camera. The people wanted smaller, and smaller they got. No the people didn’t get smaller, the cameras did. Which made the people look bigger if anything.

In 1985, Sony of Japan introduced the Handycam, and with it the Video8 format. Much smaller than the competition's VHS and Betamax video cameras, Video8 became wildly popular in the consumer camcorder market. Video8 tapes are analog. About the size of a deck of playing cards, they are half an inch thick, 2 ½ inches wide, and just under 4 inches tall. The technology managed to reduce the size of the cartridge, but it did nothing to lengthen the life of the tape itself. 8mm tape degrades just as rapidly as 12mm tape. Thus, it is in your best interest to transfer your Video8 to digital and DVD using a professional conversion service like the one we have at Legacybox. You may have packed them a little tighter, a little deeper in the attic as a result of their smaller size.

At least VHS was a mainstay in every home. You can’t find Video8 equipment or support anywhere anymore, leaving you high and dry when it comes to watching the tapes with the family. And you need to see those tapes. Handycams meant mobility. More cameras filming in more places with more freedom and creativity. This was the next generation of filming, so the next generation needs to have access to it by safeguarding those memories. You may have worn a handycam on the rope swing over the lake. You may have Video8 of yourself screaming the whole way through the rollercoaster ride. Losing those tapes forever would really make you scream.

Luckily, we’ve got everything you need to turn those Video8 frowns upside down. Our Video8 to digital transfer service is fast, easy, and we can talk you through the entire process. Our technicians see to the safe digitization and conversion of hundreds of tapes every day, right in our own studio. We send you a crushproof Legacybox with pre-paid Fedex shipping and tracking (both ways). After everything is transferred thumb drive, digital delivery through Legacybox Cloud™ or DVD, we return all of your original tapes, so you can save them to use as fuel in the upcoming robot apocalypse.
