In 1985, Sony introduced the Handycam, and everybody with tired arms lifted them one more time to applaud. The Video8 analog video/audio format helped make video cameras smaller and more functional than the bulky VHS and Betamax recorders that had held court until then. Hi8 was an upgrade to the analog format by virtue of making provision for digital audio. The “8” references the 8mm video tape (Betamax tapes were 12mm) and the “hi” references to the higher quality in a breezy good-to-meet-you sort of way.
Do you have any Hi-8 tapes? About the size of a deck of playing cards, they are half an inch thick, 2 ½ inches wide, and just under 4 inches tall. They were just cute enough to hang onto forever and forget about once they went up into the attic or into back of the closet. How could you have known that forever had a time limit? But it’s true. The magnetic Hi-8 tapes of the late 1980s and early 1990s disintegrating rapidly. They will quickly turn into “Lo-8” tapes, and if you don’t transfer them to digital immediately, will sadly become a box full of “No-8”s before you know it. They don’t make the tapes anymore, they don’t make the cameras anymore, and I think it is safe to assume that nobody is going to give you a refund when you discover your hi 8 tapes have been erased by time, and with them the proof of your belly flop contest victory over uncle Blob.
