With the technology to compress images, manufacturers were able to put more portable camcorders and more compact tapes on the market. When digital video became widely available, magnetic tape was rendered obsolete. MiniDV technology flew south in the mid-2000s, never to return. Don’t go looking for it. The species is practically extinct.
The quality of Mini DVC was never better than VHS, just smaller. Unfortunately, your memories were still being captured on magnetic tape, which means that they are degrading as we speak, er, quack, leaving you a sitting duck. Fuzzy and yellow is good for a duckling. Not so much for video playback.
